It’s where the rubber meets the road. It’s where the can hits the curb. Whether it’s a 1, 2, or 3-can system, your customers want to put their stuff out on trash day and have it all just go away. On commercial routes it’s the same story. The unspoken message from your customers is “Don’t make me work and don’t make me think.”

But somebody’s got to work and think. And that’s your job.

So, you optimize your routes and streamline your operation. You analyze cycle time, payload, missed stops per day, lifts per hour, and a hundred other critical parts of your operation. You do it all so your customers don’t have to work, and they don’t have to think.

Understand your goals

  • How safe and efficient is your collections operation?
  • What are your metrics?
  • Do you track Key Performance Indicators?
  • When you compare how good your operation is to how good it could be, what in fact is your point of comparison?

You could look at industry standards for collections. Or you could create your own performance improvement program based on your operation. You could do those things if you had the time and if you know how to do it – or you could work with the folks who have been optimizing solid waste operations since 1988.
